The TOEFL iBT exam measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. It also evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills to perform academic tasks.
The TOEFL iBT exam is intended for individuals who want to pursue undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral studies, particularly in the United States, as well as in other countries and in Turkey. Students who wish to bypass the preparatory class and start their undergraduate studies directly at universities in Turkey where English is the language of instruction can also use their TOEFL iBT results. Additionally, people who need to certify their English proficiency for employment in certain institutions or organizations in Turkey, or those seeking a foreign language compensation at their workplace, may also take the TOEFL iBT exam.
To achieve success in the TOEFL iBT exam, you need to have completed an advanced level of English.
You can register for the TOEFL iBT exam online through the ETS website. Candidates need to create a user account on the ETS site. Afterward, they can select a test center and date based on their city and proceed with the registration. Exams are held every two weeks. You can take the TOEFL iBT exam as many times as you wish in 165 countries worldwide. Registrations are available 24/7 on www.ets.org and close 7 days before the desired exam date.
The TOEFL iBT exam consists of four main sections: Reading Section: Contains two reading passages, each approximately 700 words long, with 10 questions per passage. The reading section takes about 35 minutes to complete. Listening Section: Includes lectures and conversations, simulating the language used on a university campus. You will listen to 3 lectures (3-5 minutes each), some with classroom discussions, and answer 6 questions per lecture. Additionally, you will listen to 2 conversations (3 minutes each) with 5 questions per conversation. Note-taking is allowed, and the listening section takes about 36 minutes to complete. Speaking Section: The TOEFL iBT Speaking section assesses your ability to speak English effectively in academic settings. Here are four tasks: one independent task and three integrated tasks. Task 1: Independent speaking task that requires you to express your own ideas, opinions, and experiences. Tasks 2–4: Integrated speaking tasks that combine your listening and reading skills, much like real-life academic situations. You will have 15-30 seconds of preparation time and 45-60 seconds to respond to each task. Your answers will be recorded. The speaking section takes about 16 minutes to complete. Writing Section: Consists of two writing tasks. Task 1: Integrated writing task (20 minutes); read a short passage and listen to a short lecture, then write a response. Task 2: Academic discussion writing task (10 minutes); present and support an idea in an online class discussion. You will type your responses using a computer keyboard.
The total exam takes less than 2 hours to complete, but you should plan for 2.5 hours, which includes 30 minutes for the check-in process.
Your TOEFL iBT score will range between 0 and 120. Since each skill is equally weighted, the TOEFL iBT score is calculated by summing the four section scores. Each section—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—is worth 30 points, so you'll receive a total score between 0 and 120, with individual section scores between 0 and 30.
The TOEFL iBT score is valid for 2 years.
